How to Make a Mood Board


Learn the language of mood boards to express your concepts!

If you work, or wish to work, across fashion and lifestyle media and brands, one very important skill you need to develop is how to visually articulate and communicate a concept.

This program will teach you visual communication, and how to “read” or analyse imagery. You will also learn research methodologies and how to build your own unique “visual vocabulary”, in addition to using and interpreting references.

You will get the keys to know how to respond to a brief from an editor or client, and will see industry examples of mood boards. Additionally you will learn about art direction.

It might be a brief you are creating for a freelance employee, or a pitch you are sending to an editor, or a presentation for a brand you are competing to work with. Within fashion and lifestyle industries we often communicate via a mood board, or visual “deck”.

At the end of the program you will follow a brief to make your own editorial mood board, which your tutor, John William, will give direct feedback on.

John William has been working at the forefront of fashion media for over 15 years. An industry professional, he specialises in journalism, styling, creative direction, trend forecasting and photography.

He launched London College of Fashion’s print magazine ‘Pigeons and Peacocks’ in 2008 and continued to work as the Editor in Chief for the next five years. Editorial clients include: i-D, Vice, The Sunday Times Style, Paper, Puss Puss, Please! and Nylon. For the past decade, John has been working as an Associate Lecturer at the London College of Fashion across a number of BA courses.
